Psalm 10
New International Version
Psalm 10[a]
2Â In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak,(C)
who are caught in the schemes he devises.
3Â He boasts(D) about the cravings of his heart;
he blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.(E)
4Â In his pride the wicked man does not seek him;
in all his thoughts there is no room for God.(F)
5Â His ways are always prosperous;
your laws are rejected by[b] him;
he sneers at all his enemies.
6Â He says to himself, âNothing will ever shake me.â
He swears, âNo one will ever do me harm.â(G)
7Â His mouth is full(H) of lies and threats;(I)
trouble and evil are under his tongue.(J)
8Â He lies in wait(K) near the villages;
from ambush he murders the innocent.(L)
His eyes watch in secret for his victims;
9Â like a lion in cover he lies in wait.
He lies in wait to catch the helpless;(M)
he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.(N)
10Â His victims are crushed,(O) they collapse;
they fall under his strength.
11Â He says to himself, âGod will never notice;(P)
he covers his face and never sees.â(Q)
12Â Arise,(R) Lord! Lift up your hand,(S) O God.
Do not forget the helpless.(T)
13Â Why does the wicked man revile God?(U)
Why does he say to himself,
âHe wonât call me to accountâ?(V)
14Â But you, God, see the trouble(W) of the afflicted;
you consider their grief and take it in hand.
The victims commit themselves to you;(X)
you are the helper(Y) of the fatherless.
15Â Break the arm of the wicked man;(Z)
call the evildoer to account for his wickedness
that would not otherwise be found out.
16Â The Lord is King for ever and ever;(AA)
the nations(AB) will perish from his land.
17Â You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted;(AC)
you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,(AD)
18Â defending the fatherless(AE) and the oppressed,(AF)
so that mere earthly mortals
will never again strike terror.

False Religion Worthless
7Â This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2Â âStand(A) at the gate of the Lordâs house and there proclaim this message:
ââHear the word of the Lord, all you people of Judah who come through these gates to worship the Lord. 3Â This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Reform your ways(B) and your actions, and I will let you live(C) in this place. 4Â Do not trust(D) in deceptive(E) words and say, âThis is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord!â 5Â If you really change(F) your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly,(G) 6Â if you do not oppress(H) the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood(I) in this place, and if you do not follow other gods(J) to your own harm, 7Â then I will let you live in this place, in the land(K) I gave your ancestors(L) for ever and ever. 8Â But look, you are trusting(M) in deceptive(N) words that are worthless.
9Â ââWill you steal(O) and murder,(P) commit adultery(Q) and perjury,[a](R) burn incense to Baal(S) and follow other gods(T) you have not known, 10Â and then come and stand(U) before me in this house,(V) which bears my Name, and say, âWe are safeââsafe to do all these detestable things?(W) 11Â Has this house,(X) which bears my Name, become a den of robbers(Y) to you? But I have been watching!(Z) declares the Lord.
12Â ââGo now to the place in Shiloh(AA) where I first made a dwelling(AB) for my Name,(AC) and see what I did(AD) to it because of the wickedness of my people Israel. 13Â While you were doing all these things, declares the Lord, I spoke(AE) to you again and again,(AF) but you did not listen;(AG) I called(AH) you, but you did not answer.(AI) 14Â Therefore, what I did to Shiloh(AJ) I will now do to the house that bears my Name,(AK) the temple(AL) you trust in, the place I gave to you and your ancestors. 15Â I will thrust you from my presence,(AM) just as I did all your fellow Israelites, the people of Ephraim.â(AN)

Warning Against Unbelief
7Â So, as the Holy Spirit says:(A)
âToday, if you hear his voice,
8Â do not harden your hearts(B)
as you did in the rebellion,
during the time of testing in the wilderness,
9Â where your ancestors tested and tried me,
though for forty years they saw what I did.(C)
10Â That is why I was angry with that generation;
I said, âTheir hearts are always going astray,
and they have not known my ways.â
11Â So I declared on oath in my anger,(D)
âThey shall never enter my rest.â (E)â[a](F)
12Â See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.(G) 13Â But encourage one another daily,(H) as long as it is called âToday,â so that none of you may be hardened by sinâs deceitfulness.(I) 14Â We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold(J) our original conviction firmly to the very end.(K) 15Â As has just been said:
16Â Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt?(M) 17Â And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies perished in the wilderness?(N) 18Â And to whom did God swear that they would never enter his rest(O) if not to those who disobeyed?(P) 19Â So we see that they were not able to enter, because of their unbelief.(Q)
A Sabbath-Rest for the People of God
4Â Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you be found to have fallen short of it.(R) 2Â For we also have had the good news proclaimed to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because they did not share the faith of those who obeyed.[c](S) 3Â Now we who have believed enter that rest, just as God has said,
And yet his works have been finished since the creation of the world. 4Â For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: âOn the seventh day God rested from all his works.â[e](U) 5Â And again in the passage above he says, âThey shall never enter my rest.â(V)
6Â Therefore since it still remains for some to enter that rest, and since those who formerly had the good news proclaimed to them did not go in because of their disobedience,(W) 7Â God again set a certain day, calling it âToday.â This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted:
8Â For if Joshua had given them rest,(Y) God would not have spoken(Z) later about another day. 9Â There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10Â for anyone who enters Godâs rest also rests from their works,[g](AA) just as God did from his.(AB) 11Â Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.(AC)
